Questions And Answers
hCG pregnancy test is very common, so what is hCG? How does it come about? When can I take the test? What does this test mean? If you'd like to learn about it, please read on.
Q1. What is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)?
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone, produced by the developing placenta shortly after the conception and secreted into the urine and serum. hCG can be detected in both urine and serum as early as 7 to 10 days after conception. hCG levels continue to rise very rapidly, frequently exceeding 100 mIU/mL by the first missed menstrual period and peaking in the 100,000 - 200,000 mIU/mL range about 10 - 12 weeks into pregnancy.
Q2. How soon after I suspect that I am pregnant can I take the test?
For Early Result Pregnancy Test Strip, Early Result Pregnancy Test Cassette and Early Result Pregnancy Test, you can test your urine as early as 5 days before the expected period (6 days before missed period). For hCG Pregnancy Test Strip, hCG Pregnancy Test Cassette and Pregnancy Test, you can test your urine as early as the first day you miss your period. You can perform the test anytime of the day; however, if you are pregnant, first morning urine contains the highest concentration of the hCG hormone.
Q3. Do I have to test with first morning urine?
Although you can test any time of the day your first morning urine specimen is usually the most concentrated of the day and would have the highest concentration of hCG.
Q4. How accurate is the test?
The results from our study demonstrated >99% overall accuracy of this test. But the >99% overall accuracy is applicable only to tests conducted on or after the first day of the missed period.
Q5. Which factors may affect the test result?
Prescription medications which contain hCG (such as Pregnyl, Profasi, Pergonal, APL) can give a false positive result. Alcohol, oral contraceptives, painkillers, antibiotics or hormone therapies that do not contain hCG should not affect the test result.
Q6. Does a positive result mean anything other than normal pregnancy if it shows that I am pregnant?
Yes, there are other medical conditions or medications that can cause positive results. Consult your physician for any positive pregnancy result.
Q7. How do I know that the test was run properly?
The appearance of a red line in the control window (C) tells you that you followed the test procedure properly and the proper amount of urine was absorbed.
Q8. What should I do if the result shows that I am pregnant?
You should see a health care provider to confirm you are pregnant. Your health care provider can advise you on what steps you should take next.
Q9. What should I do if the result shows that I am not pregnant?
hCG concentration can vary greatly in early pregnancy. If you do not start your period within a week of the expected date, repeat the test using a new test device. If you receive the same result after repeating the test and you still do not get your period, you should consult a health care provider.
Q10. What should I do after testing?
You should not take any decision of medical relevance without consulting the appropriate healthcare professional.
